 Zora Neale Hurston, born on January 7, 1891 , in Notasulga, Alabama, was a prominent African American author, folklorist, and anthropologist of the Harlem Renaissance. Her parents, John Hurston and Lucy Ann Hurston, were formerly enslaved, and Zora was the fifth of eight children. The family moved to Eatonville, Florida, where Zora spent her formative years, later depicting Eatonville in much of her writing as a symbol of African American self-governance and culture. Despite financial struggles, Hurston's childhood was imbued with the richness of African American oral traditions and folklore, which profoundly influenced her literary works. After attending Howard University and later Barnard College, Hurston became one of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance, known for her novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and her contributions to African American literature and folklore studies. Gatewood, but Miles was the one who took all the credit. Gatewood was a West Point grad who had previously fought in the Indian Wars. Unlike most of his counterparts, Gatewood spent years learning about the Apache and their way of life; he even learned to speak their language. Gatewood eventually earned the respect of the Apache rebel leader, Geronimo, who surrendered to him peacefully under the terms that he would spend two years on a Florida reservation.
