Zora Neale Hurston, born on January 7, 1891 , in Notasulga, Alabama, was a prominent African American author, folklorist, and anthropologist of the Harlem Renaissance. Her parents, John Hurston and Lucy Ann Hurston, were formerly enslaved, and Zora was the fifth of eight children. The family moved to Eatonville, Florida, where Zora spent her formative years, later depicting Eatonville in much of her writing as a symbol of African American self-governance and culture. Despite financial struggles, Hurston's childhood was imbued with the richness of African American oral traditions and folklore, which profoundly influenced her literary works.
