Some parts of the body endure far longer: skin, tendons, heart valves, and corneas can remain viable for a full day, while white blood cells can persist for nearly three days. Yet, even more astonishing is a phenomenon scientists call the “twilight of death.” Certain cells continue gene transcription—copying DNA into RNA—hours or even days after clinical death.
