Though Beck Weathers was left for dead on Mount Everest twice during a 1996 blizzard — and his wife was even notified of his untimely demise — he miraculously survived his hypothermic coma and successfully climbed down the mountain on two frozen feet. His fellow climbers were shocked to see that he was still alive, especially considering his vulnerable state. One witness recalled, "This man had no face. It was completely black, solid black, like he had a crust over him." Still, Weathers was motivated by the sheer willpower to live and stayed strong as he waited for a helicopter to evacuate him. Though he later lost his right arm, his left-hand fingers, part of his nose, and several parts of his feet to frostbite, he ultimately escaped with his life.
