A mailing we received from the US Forest Service a year ago turned our world upside down, replacing joy with anxiety, comfort with grief, and peace of mind with dread. The envelope contained the Buffalo Springs “Restoration” Proposal for 30,000 acres in southern Orange County, Indiana, that includes our home and the surrounding Hoosier National Forest. The proposal includes clearcuts and other forms of logging right up to our property line – a total of more than five thousand acres of logging of which 800 acres are immediately adjacent to our home. To access this logging, they propose to convert eight miles of the thirteen mile Youngs Creek Horse Trail that runs past our driveway into a logging road for ten years or more.
