On this day in 1943, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began against the Nazis by Jews forced to live in horrific conditions where disease and malnourishment were rife. The population of the ghetto had fallen from 450K to just 71,000 thanks to the conditions, the transfer of Jews to concentration camps and other atrocities committed by Nazi Germany’s forces. Upon learning that the ghetto’s Jews were to be exterminated in Treblinka concentration camp, the residents staged a heroic last stand where armed Jewish anti-fascist militants organised a counter-attack against Nazi forces who had been sent to crush the rebellion. The resistance would last until the 29th of April, when it would finally be defeated. The memory of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising remains one of the most heroic episodes of defiance against fascism in World War 2, where despite the odds against them, the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto fought for their right to human dignity instead of enduring more barbarism and evil....
