 April 26th, 1901. Sheriff Salome Garcia of Union County, New Mexico, tightens the noose around the neck of Thomas Edward Ketchum also known as Black Jack Ketchum.


 Black Jack Ketchum was the only person ever hanged in Union County, New Mexico Territory (now Union County, New Mexico). He was also the only person who suffered capital punishment for the offense of "felonious assault upon a railway train" in the New Mexico Territory.

 The execution by hanging was botched; he was decapitated because the executioner used a rope that was too long.

It was created in response to a brutal and highly publicised rape and murder of a nursing student, Sara Ann Otten, by another student in March 1973. The following month Mendieta invited her fellow students to her apartment where, through a door left purposefully ajar, they found her in the position recorded in this photograph, which recreated the scene as reported in the press. Some time later, Mendieta recalled that her audience ‘all sat down, and started talking about it. I didn’t move. I stayed in position about an hour. This is a torture device used during the Spanish Inquisition. I came across it while touring a museum in Granada entirely dedicated to the Spanish Inquisition. Supposedly this specific device was really used during the Inquisition but I have no way to verify that. According to the museum: “Interrogation Chair: The colossal amount of spikes, more than a thousand, made this an essential instrument of the torture chamber to instill fear in the prisoner. The accused was seated naked and the pain would increase by hitting them or by pushing the various parts of the body against the spikes. Sometimes the seat was made of iron so that it could be heated from below.” But if you think this is bad I have pictures of instruments that make this look tame and will make your skin crawl.
