AMERICAN REVOLUTION HISTORY BITS: Rev. Jonathan Boucher (1738-1804) had been a Loyalist Anglican minister in Virginia.

Before the Revolution, he had been a very close friend to George Washington and had even served as tutor to John Parke Custis, Washington’s stepson.

But Boucher took off to England in 1775 because he just didn’t agree with the American Revolution. He wrote that in America “to be very popular” all you had to be was “wrong-headed, ignorant, and prone to resist authority.” Boucher believed strongly in the Divine Right of Kings which meant God chose the monarchy… Ha!

But the most traitorous blow was that since Boucher knew George Washington so well, he wrote an intelligence spying report on Washington’s weaknesses and strengths. It was sent to Lord George Germain dated November 27, 1775, just as things were really heating up.

Boucher reported that…

George Washington could be a formidable foe… “although in the military line it is not possible [that] his merit can be considerable” since Washington had “little personal experience [in war], and less reading.”

But Washington had “extraordinary coolness and caution”…“steadiness and extreme care.”

However overall, he could be fooled by excellent British Army strategies: “He should be perplexed and confounded by stratagems… Against the manoeuvers of [military] art, I am satisfied he is defenceless.”

Wow, Boucher called that one wrong.
