This unnamed French veteran was photographed by Bruno Barbey on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Verdun in 1976, where this veteran fought during the First World War.

.

Since this veteran is wearing the iconic blue and red French infantryman uniform from 1914, it's safe to assume he fought in the First World War from the very beginning. His many medals suggest he was wounded during the war, and the Croix de Guerre means he performed some special act of heroism at one point - perhaps at Verdun.

.

With the French 151st Infantry Regiment he would've fought in the bloody Battle of the Frontiers, specifically in the Battle of Charleroi in August 1914. In September 1914 the regiment fought in the First Battle of the Marne and in the First Battle of Ypres in October 1914.

.

In 1915 the regiment was positioned in the Argonne forest before participating in the Second Battle of Champagne in September 1915.

.

In February 1916, this veteran fought in the bloody Battle of Verdun, a place he'd return to 60 years later in this photograph. In September 1916 the regiment was moved to the Somme, participating in a battle just as bloody as Verdun.

.

In April 1917 the regiment fought in the Second Battle of the Aisne where it established itself as an 'Elite Regiment'. In September 1917 they moved back to Verdun for the Second Battle of Verdun.

.

In June 1918 the regiment fought in the Noyon-Montdidier Offensive as part of the German Spring Offensive, and in August 1918 in the counter-attack in the Second Battle of the Marne.

.

Having participated in almost all major French offensives it seems incredible that this veteran made it out alive. He undoubtedly lost a lot of comrades throughout the war, and one can only wonder what he thought about at the time of this photograph.
