It represents an important stylistic bridge between the Classical & Romantic periods of Western music history.

It took three decades in making and Beethoven had lost his hearing steadily during the course of the symphony's composition. The work had only two full rehearsals before it was premiered on 7 May 1824 in the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna. Beethoven—stone deaf at this time—took part in the performance by giving the tempos for each part and turning the pages of his score “as though he wanted to play all the instruments and sing all the chorus parts.”

It's said that once the premier concert was over, Beethoven was still facing his musicians as he couldn't hear the audience applause. He was made to turn around so that he could at least see the crowd applauding if not hear it!

Beethoven never heard a note of his magnificent composition outside his own imagination.
