Edward Griffith Richards was born in 1826, in Stapleton, Gloucestershire, to Henry Richards and Caroline Daubeny. In 1841, the family lived at Parsonage House, Horfield, Gloucestershire, where his father was a clerk. The family had three servants.

The family lived at the same address in 1851, and his father was listed as curate of parish church. Edwards occupation is listed as "M.A grad Oxford University".

On the 11th of October 1855, he married Charlotte Emilie Silliery "Oct. 11, at Bath, Ford Bath, by the Rev. Robert Williams, M.A., Vicar of Aston-Itowant, Oxfordshire, Uncle of the Bride, assisted by the Rev. Henry Richards, B.D. Incumbent of Horfield, Gloucestershire, father of the Bridegroom, Edward Griffith Richards, Esq., Captain in the 2nd Somerset Regiment of Militia, to Charlotto Emilie, second daughter of 'Robert Sillery, Esq., M.D., of Charlton Lodge, Dover, Kent."

As seen above, Edward was in the 2nd Somerset Regiment which had been revived in 1852. The regiment spent time in Ireland but never saw action in the Crimean War. By the time of the 1861 census, Edward's occupation was listed as "Late captain in the militia. Justice of Peace for county of Somerset".

The family lived at Langford House, Langford, Somerset, a large property and gardens built in 1826 by John Fisher. It was here they had their six children, Francis in 1857, Mary in 1858, Henry in 1859, Helena in 1860, Edith in 1862, and Edward in 1863.

Tragedy struck the family as Edward passed away on the 16th of December 1863, aged 37. The only information in his death appeared in the Gloucester Journal "Richards—December 16, at Weston-super-Mare, Edward Griffith Richards Esq., J.P., of Langford House, in the county of Somerset, aged 37 years."
