— and my family, my ancestral home, that lay in Sindh, was suddenly not the old India anymore. At first - no one thought much of it, Sindhi Muslims and Hindus had been living together peacefully for centuries. But unfortunately, a dark night came when my family, just like many millions of others, had to flee, in a freight train, across to the ‘new’ India as refugees. Homeless, stateless, penniless… except for the gold bangles on my grandmothers wrists - they had to start from scratch. Partition. A loss of heart, home, anchor. An unbearable loss of lives and possessions and homes — but not a loss of hope. Partition for the Sindhi community is also a story of resilience, perseverance, and determination — that’s what my Sindhi heritage and culture stands for. No matter what - we will adapt, learn, grow, work hard and overcome. We grew up listening to my grandparents’ heart breaking stories of Partition. We saw the tears and felt their pain. @whereissamm and I promised my Nanas (maternal grandfathers) that we would write their stories and so I did - and it’s a picture book! A Children’s story book about Partition? Yes, a story told through the eyes of a young girl about hope, heart-break, & loss. But mostly, hope. And food that represents love in our families and the sad change that came with losing everything, but then came hope and perseverance.
