Tribute to freedom fighter Surya Sen, also known as Master Da, on his Punyatithi.

He was hanged by the British this day, the 12th of January in 1934 at Chittagong. Many freedom fighters, during the time of execution, chanted ‘Vande Mataram’. To ensure that Surya Sen not utter ‘Vande Mataram’, the British t0rtured him brutally. Sen’s nails were plucked out and his teeth hammered off before his execution.

There were many organizations set up by freedom fighters across the country for armed revolt against the British. One such organization was the Indian Republican Army led by Surya Sen in the Bengal Presidency. On 18 April 1930, freedom fighters representing the Indian Republican Army raided the Chittagong armoury of the British. Surya Sen hoisted the national flag outside the police armoury and declared formation of a Provisional Revolutionary Government. The British set to action and soon a battle followed between the British forces and the Indian Republican Army in Jallalabad Hills. It was April 22, 1930. A ceasefire was declared after the sun set. Soon after, the British conducted raids and arrested many freedom fighters.

Surya Sen stayed in hiding, in disguise, to avoid arrest. He moved from one place to another, doing different jobs. The British declared a big reward to the one who could inform about the whereabouts of Sen. While he was hiding at a friend’s place, Sen’s relative Netra Sen informed the British about his hiding place. That was how the British could arrest him. This was how traitors deceived the motherland, siding with the enemies and this continues to this day. Before Netra Sen was to receive his award from the British, a freedom fighter behe@ded him for turning out to be a traitor.

This was how millions of freedom fighters and Dharmic warriors fought for the freedom we enjoy today. And we are told, we attained freedom ‘bina khadag bina dhal’.
