The last man to be beheaded on London's Tower Hill,

Simon Fraser, the 11th Lord Lovat, was executed on this day in 1747. Lovat was a Jacobite rebel who became notorious for his changes of allegiance and was accused of treason after being defeated at the Battle of Culloden.

Lovat was beheaded by John Thrift and the public execution took a terrible turn when a platform holding spectators collapsed, killing twenty people.
