 On September 29, 2012, Harold Henthorn surprised his wife Toni with a romantic hike in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park for their 12th anniversary.


But while trekking up Deer Mountain, Toni suddenly fell 140 feet to her death — and Harold's story about what happened changed twice over the next 48 hours. He first claimed that he simply turned around at one point to find that Toni was no longer behind him, and when he started searching for her, he spotted her body at the bottom of a cliff. He then said that she fell while he was checking his phone for a text message. Finally, he said that she accidentally stepped backward off the cliff while trying to take a photo of him.


And the inconsistent stories weren't the only aspects of the case that police found incriminating. Investigators soon discovered a map in Harold's car on which the trail that he and Toni had hiked was highlighted. What's more, there was an X drawn on the map — at the very spot where Toni died. Harold was quickly arrested and eventually convicted of Toni's murder. And along the way, investigators learned that this wasn't the first time that one of his wives had died under circumstances that were suspicious, to say the least.
