As a child in the late 1970s, Jonathan Brandis had a distinct cherubic appearance that caught the attention of child modeling agencies and earned him his first modeling gig at just two years old

. He went on to land roles in "One Life to Live," "Stephen King's It," "The NeverEnding Story II," "Sidekicks," and "Ladybugs," making him one of Hollywood's brightest young stars. As a teen idol, he then skyrocketed to greater fame while starring in Steven Spielberg's 1990s TV series "seaQuest DSV." By that point, he was receiving some 4,000 fan letters a week and came in at #1 in Seventeen Magazine's readers' poll of the 10 sexiest guys in 1994. While the series was being filmed, he needed three security guards to escort him through the studio lot due to the mob of fans who showed up just to get a glimpse of him.

Brandis had high hopes for his career, telling interviewers that he wished to direct and write one day. Tragically, he never got the chance. As he got older, Brandis experienced a lull in his career as many of his acting projects were canceled, delayed, or edited so that his part was significantly reduced. In 2000, when he auditioned for the role of Anakin Skywalker in "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones," the casting directors reportedly deemed the mid-twenties Brandis too old. As he struggled to revive his career, Brandis fell into a deep depression and began drinking heavily — and in November 2003, he died by suicide at the age of just 27.
