History and learning the lessons from it is one of my interests and passions.

An important subject given the many examples of evil and hatred that seem to be a constant in our news today.

On this day, 30 April 1945, the Ravensbrück Nazi concentration camp was liberated by the Soviet Army. Ravensbrück was designed specifically for women by Heinrich Himmler, prime architect of the #Holocaust, and opened in May 1939.

Over 132,000 women and children passed through the camp, an estimated 50,000 to 90,000 were murdered or died from neglect.

Forced medical experiments without anaesthetic were performed on prisoners and over 2,200 perished in the camp gas chamber. In April 1945, as the Soviet Army came closer, thousands more women and girls died on death marches as the Nazis moved the camp west.

This image shows 'Le Rouleau' ('The roller'), drawn by Felicie Mertens, a Belgian prisoner of Ravensbrück. One method of extreme forced labour and torture inflicted on those treated so brutally in this most terrible of places.
