The Western Front Association’s journal, Stand To! has hit the doorsteps! 


It’s always a great read, and this issue features a leading article by our very own Andy Prada, a founder member of the Durand Group and leading expert on the Loos Salient during the First World War. 

Andy discusses the complex tunnel systems beneath the Loos battlefield, home to much of the graffiti we have been sharing with you all.

It is thought to have belong to a friend or relative of the Emperor Augustus, perhaps even Agrippa himself, and dates to the 1st century BC. This room, called Triniculum C, has mainly a "black color (atramentum), made from a mixture of charcoal and glue, was resistant to smoke from the fire and soot from the lamps" per the National Roman Museum - Palazzo Massimo in Rome where this is on display.

Larcena Pennington Page (January 10, 1837 – March 31, 1913), born Larcena Ann Pennington, was an American pioneer known for surviving a kidnapping by Apache as a young married woman of 23 years old in present-day Arizona. Left for dead and unable to stand, she crawled 15 miles (24 km) over the next sixteen days to reach safety. After her kidnapping, Larcena was indirectly involved in several other incidents with Apache. Much of her family died during her life as a result of native attacks or infectious diseases on the frontier. 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 Born Larcena Ann Pennington, in Nashville, Tennessee, she was the daughter of Elias and Julia Ann Pennington. One of 12 children, she had seven sisters and four brothers. Her father, Elias, was the son of Elijah Pennington, a soldier who served under General George Washington at Valley Forge during the American Revolutionary War.  The year is 1370, and there was a guy named John. Okay, well there were probably a lot of John’s back then, but the one specifically we’re taking a snapshot of here is John Saundirson. Now, John had a problem. Well, more accurately, his wife Tedia Lambhird had the problem.... She took umbrage at the fact he could not, or would not, perform in the bedchamber. 🫣 This was a big deal back then. In those days, impotence meant you could not father a child. The entire purpose of marriage, was to produce offspring. While everyone back then was just as lusty and bawdy as now, the idea of “having fun” in the bedchambers was not something the pious allowed. Being unable to make offspring meant the marriage was 'insufficient', and that alone was warrant enough to allow for divorce. 🫣 So what did Tedia do?
