His parents' relationship went against Zulu custom, and after his father rejected them, Shaka and his mother, Nandi, were forced to live among people who often looked down on them. Those hard years helped shape the strong and determined leader he later became.

When Shaka became king, he changed the Zulu army completely. He made it one of the strongest fighting forces in Africa. He did not allow soldiers to marry while they were still serving, believing family life would make them less ready for war. He also replaced many traditional initiation ceremonies with military training.

Everything changed after Nandi died in 1827. Shaka was overcome with grief. Historical records say he banned planting crops and drinking milk for a time. Many people were also punished or killed because they did not mourn as he expected, although the exact number is still debated by historians.

His harsh actions turned many people against him. In 1828, his half-brothers, Dingane and Mhlangana, killed him and buried him in an unmarked grave.
