NATIVE AMERICAN CHIEFS (c. 1888)

NATIVE AMERICAN CHIEFS (c. 1888)

These portraits come from the "Celebrated American Indian Chiefs" card series issued in 1888, featuring prominent leaders from Nations including the Pawnee, Sac & Fox, and Apache, BlackSeminoleBlack, Lenape.

Not everyone black is African or from Africa. Some of Black tribes were already here in the U.S before slaves trade.

While these images helped preserve the likenesses of respected Indigenous leaders, many of their histories, cultures, and struggles have often received far less attention than other parts of American history.

This is how natives tribes looks like before European arrival.

A portrait can capture a face.

A Nation carries the legacy.
